Let’s talk about all the supplies we need to make coasters:

Supplies Needed for adding Vinyl to Coasters

  • Heat Transfer Warehouse bundle
  • SVG file bundle
  • Cricut machine
  • Weeding tool
  • Scraper
  • Sealer of your choice (optional)

In the Heat Transfer Warehouse Bundle, you get six colours of adhesive vinyl – white, purple, blue, orange, red, and brown – plus the transfer tape to go along with them. You’ll also receive a set of four adorable hexagon coasters, and the SVG files are included too. If you don’t want to purchase the entire bundle, there are other options available.

Adding Your Designs to Cricut Design Space

Upload the SVG files of your choice. For more detailed instructions, check here. Add a shape to Design Space that matches the size and shape of your coaster. Use this as a guide to resize your design to fit the blank. Repeat this process for as many designs and coasters as you’re making. Ensure all the colors are attached together, then click “Make It.” Delete the shape you added from your canvas, and click “Make It” again to continue with your cut.

Vinyl Cutting with Your Cricut Machine

You can use any Cricut machine for this project. Grab your Cricut, the fine point blade, and set it to the vinyl setting. Place the vinyl sheets on a light grip mat with the backing paper down. Remember, adhesive vinyl is cut face up, so there’s no need to mirror it.

Cut each color you need for your coasters, then move on to weeding your vinyl.

Vinyl Weeding for Perfect Coasters

Start in the corner and pull down with a weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl from around the outside.

Once you’ve cut the vinyl on a table, weed out the centers of letters or any other parts of the design that you don’t want transferred to your coaster. Go slow when weeding and ensure everything is cut correctly. Continue this process for all of your pieces.

Applying Vinyl to Cricut Coasters: A Step-by-Step Guide

Make sure to clean your coaster before you get started. A quick wipe with rubbing alcohol or a pass with a lint roller will do the trick. Next, place a piece of transfer tape over the vinyl. I usually trim my transfer tape to roughly match the size of my project.

If you have a two-layer design, add the top layer to the transfer tape first. Burnish it down well, then peel back the carrier sheet, leaving that first layer on your transfer tape.

After you’ve placed the first layer on the tape, position it correctly over the second layer. If you’re having trouble aligning them, try using the parchment paper hack. Once it’s in the right spot, burnish it down well. Burnish from the back and peel off the carrier sheet, leaving both layers on your transfer tape. Then, add both layers to the coaster. Burnish the vinyl down well and peel back the transfer tape. Your coaster is now complete.

You can reuse the same piece of transfer tape for your next design. If your design has multiple colors that don’t overlap, start with the largest layer and add it to the transfer tape like before. Next, add the layer with the most vinyl. Burnish it from the back and peel off the carrier sheet.

Repeat this process for the remaining colors, then apply the layered design to your coaster. Burnish it well and peel back the transfer tape to finish your second coaster. Just follow the same steps for all the coaster designs you want to make.

How to Seal Vinyl on Coasters?

Now that we have all these awesome vinyl coasters, what should we do with them? Remember, permanent vinyl is, well, permanent! However, you need to wait 72 hours after applying the vinyl to your coasters before you start using them.

If you want some extra protection for your coasters, there are a few options. You can apply a couple of layers of Mod Podge over the top. I recommend using outdoor Mod Podge since these coasters will get wet from drinks. Apply two to three coats, letting each coat dry before adding the next. Make sure to follow all the instructions on the label.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of dishwasher-safe Mod Podge because it requires a 28-day curing period, which I don’t think is worth the wait. I prefer outdoor Mod Podge as it seems to work better in my experience.

If you want the ultimate in protection for your coasters, I recommend using an epoxy topcoat. While it’s more involved to apply, it ensures your coasters will last a long time. Opt for a two-part epoxy topcoat: mix the components together, pour it over the top of your coasters, and allow it to cure.

When applying an epoxy topcoat, there are a few important things to remember:
